Day 3 in Gran Canaria started very windy. With gusts ripping through the event site at over 45kts. With no waves in site the women freestylers hit the water for the first time.
Conditions were extreme to say the least, proving very difficult for most of the girls. In the end however 4 girls rose to the occasional to meet in the semi final. Daida against Junko, whilst Sara went head to head with Laura.
Disaster struck for poor Laura however. Mid way through a flaka, she lost control as a gust hit her tiny 3.0 sail. She hit the boom hard breaking it with her neck. Unable to breath she drifted ashore and was rusted to hospital. Luckily nothing was broken, but its unlikely she will be back on the water for a few days.
This meant Junko automatically took 3rd, whilst Sara and Daida went head to head in the final. Daida used her jumps to gain points, with a nice backloop and some quality forwards. Sara-quita however used her new skool freestyle repertoire to take the win. With moves like puneta 900\’s and funnels, she showed she is a worthy champion. There is still the double to come so it can all change, but Daida will have her work cut out to get ahead of Sara.
After a break for lunch it was time for Slalom. 2 rounds run back to back gave Antione 2 more wins to add to his collection and left the rest of the fleet competing for 2nd. The first final saw Pritchard grab the runners up place, with Angulo taking 3rd.
Race 2 however saw the previous 2nd and 3rd place candidates getting a bit over excited, both jumping the gun and therefore finishing last. This left Volwater and Cyril to fight for the coveted 2nd and 3rd position. Volwater led almost to the end, but Cyril crept past him on the final reach to take 2nd.
The racing overall is now:
1 Antoine Albeau
2 Kevin Pritchard
3 Björn Dunkerbeck
4 Cyril Moussilmani
5 Finian Maynard
There is still the possibility to run 10 more round, so for sure there will be some changes. Check back tomorrow to see if anyone can get ahead of Antoine!
