The RYA are actively seeking young windsurfing talent with potential and the desire, to achieve Olympic success in the future, to receive training through the Skandia Team GBR Development Programme.
Whilst we currently have World Class and medal winning sailors competing in China this summer the RYA recognises that in the RS:X Skandia Team GBR Programme there is a real need to develop our strength in depth. This is especially the case in the Women’s RS:X – Bryony Shaw is currently the only Skandia Team GBR female on the programme.
“Our top windsurfers are doing a great job at the highest level of competition but they need to be pushed and kept on their toes,” says John Derbyshire, RYA Racing Manager/Performance Director.
“The more we can get our young talent competing regularly against top international windsurfers, the quicker they will not only develop a real understanding of what it takes to make it to the top but also hone their racing skills in the best learning environment possible.”
Through the Skandia Team GBR Development Programme sailors will receive enhanced coaching and support opportunities, complimenting with other RYA National Squad programmes.
The RYA will be using results from the 2008 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta (15-20 September) and the RYA National Ranker events (4-5 and 18-19 October) as indicators. The Olympic Steering Group (OSG) will select individuals, eligible to compete for Great Britain, using
results and other factors it deems appropriate and review selection or de-selection on a periodic basis.
If you can not make the events, dont worry. Still register your interest, giving reasons for non attendance and you will receive a questionnaire to fill in and return as a start.
The RYA are looking for expressions of interest from young racers who want to be considered for the Skandia Team GBR Development Squad. Please email email@example.com to register your interest.
So if the above appeals to you and you think you have what it takes to be the next Nick Dempsey or Bryony Shaw, get yourself entered for the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta by visiting www.ryaracingevents.org.uk before 12pm on Friday 12 September.
