We didnt receive the Official response to our NeilPryde Fly 4.8 test quite in time to include it within the launch of the test report. We have now received it, added it to the test and also here for you to check:
The Fly was designed from the outset to enhance the riding style of Kauli, which is one where he\’s searching for constant drive and high levels of manoeuvrability. This is designed into the sail by mixing the core design elements such as a straighter luff curve (giving a soft overall feel) a relatively draft aft position of maximum depth and a lower aspect ratio than the other wave sails in our line. The 4.8m is also a four batten design and while this helps with weight reduction, it also contributes to a relatively soft rig. The soft rig is a bonus in terms of allowing the sail to power up in an instant and this response allows the sailor to get into critical wave sections in a more precise manner than with other rigs. Experience shows that The Fly needs to be tested approx 0.2m smaller than other wave sails in tests and that would indicate a 4.5m would have been a better comparison size. This slight size reduction effectively gets stability back to more conventional levels, while continuing to benefit from the constant drive this sail is designed to provide. A 4.5m Fly very recently scored exceptionally well in the largest print magazine in the world and was arguably the test winner against 4.7m wave sails, so this design direction and overall rig concept has been shown to work.
These characteristics were the requirements of the world champion wave sailor and a concept he wanted to follow to take his wave sailing to the next step. The design certainly represents a niche in the wave sail market, but we believe it represents the future. The Fly will continue to evolve but the design has achieved its objectives which was to win world titles and allow Kauli to exploit his talent further. As Kauli himself says “The fly is a very powerful sail and at same time very forgiving sail, offered by it soft design , something that doesn\’t exist on the market besides the Fly…”
