Last weekend the conditions were perfect to run a spectacular Spanish Championship in El Cabezo, in El Médano, Tenerife.
Despite the fact that last year winner Dany Bruch could not take part due to injury, the level of the competition was impressive. Dario Ojeda, Marcos Perez, local rippers and up-and-coming juniors all put up a good fight. In total there were 12 Cabezo Locals (including UK sailor Graham Woods), 8 Gran Canaria sailors and 10 Mainland Spaniars.
The single elimination ran smoothly on 4,7 to 5,3 meter sails and 2 meters waves. Marcos Perez won this round followed by Eleazar Alonso in second, local Valter Scotto in third and Ludo Jossin in fourth.
The double elimination was tough as everyone wanted to make a come back. The most impressive was the young 14 years old Alessio Stillrich, who won 3 heats and eventually lost to no other than Dario Ojeda.
UK sailor Graham Woods made it through a number of heats to finally make a very respectable 6th place.
Finally, the end of the double elimination was run on the next day and Dario Ojeda stole the crown from Marcos Perez after beating him twice in the final of the double elimination.
In the Masters Division Vater Scotto won in the Single but dropped to second in the double as he lost to local Sandro d’Alessio. In third position it was Per Schmitz.
Alession Stillrich was the winner in the Juniors and in the special Expression Session, local hero Bart David won the best trick, landing a backloop without footstraps on his board (he has a foot injury that doesn’t allow him to use them). Local Ivan Hernandez won the Highest Jump.
