All members of ASR’s construction team have now arrived in Boscombe to complete Europe’s first artificial surf reef.
Subject to favourable weather conditions the team will be back in the water as early as next week to begin construction of the upper layer of the surf reef. The team is currently working off site preparing the webbing/ bags and setting up equipment in readiness for work to commence.
Screening of the sand for filling the reefs giant geo-textile bags is almost complete with the screened sand stockpiled on the beach, ready for ASR to pump out to the reef site.
Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Cabinet Member for Economy and Tourism, said, “The team is back, the equipment is here, the sand is ready, all we need is some good weather and the right sea conditions. I am looking forward to seeing the team back in the water to complete our long awaited surf reef. Boscombe seafront is already coming alive and with the completion of the surf reef it will really turn Boscombe & Bournemouth into a water sports destination enjoyed by everyone.
“The refurbishment of the Overstrand building home to ‘Urban Reef’ restaurant and café, and ‘Sorted’ surf shop and surf school, is due to open next month. The retro, super beach huts designed by HemingwayDesign will also go on sale next month. I am really pleased with this unique and innovative regeneration project, the landscaping work at Sea Road and Pier Approach has really enhanced the look and feel of the area turning Boscombe into a fantastic place to live and visit.”
