“It’s been eight years since Boardseeker.com was launched. At first it was purely an equipment directory of classified adverts, but with time has developed into the popular Online Magazine that we produce today.
When we started as a magazine (nearly 5 years ago now), the format was a monthly magazine publication and could include only a tiny bit of video as most consumers were still on a dial-up connection.
In a period of just 5 years, technology has developed at an astounding rate. We can now stream full-screen movies, provide brands with movie commercials, update news stories through a phone from a remote beach and have Podcasts viewed by thousands of viewers through applications such as i-Tunes and Mpora. It’s anyones guess where we will be in another 5 years!
Whilst it is an ideal situation to have a business based around your hobby, it is still a massive amount of work. Particularly in a niche sport like windsurfing where budgets have to remain very tight. Our team have worked extremely hard over the years, with many, many unsociable hours spent ensuring deadlines are met and content is as high quality as possible. It is however a massive undertaking for such a small team to stay at the front of the game and keep evolving the product as new technologies emerge.
The acquisition of Boardseeker by Factory Media is a move that will allow us to develop the site, content and testing to levels that we just wouldn\’t be able to manage without their involvement.
Some of you may worry that this acquisition will be a backwards step for Boardseeker and that it may lose its identity. Having put my heart and soul into this business for the past 8 years, it was also a serious concern of mine.
I have had many discussions now with the Factory team and I am absolutely confident that this will not be the case. The team at Factory very much respect the qualities that have made Boardseeker successful and have every intention of continuing with them, but at the same time bringing in extra resources and their own expertise. This will indeed be a very positive step for boardseeker and one that will benefit everyone who visits the site.
Whilst no longer the owner, I will remain very much involved with the management of the site and the testing. As a reader you can still expect the same daily news stories, podcasts, regular features and comprehensive test reports, but over the course of the next 12 months will hopefully also see the benefits that the backing of a company like Factory Media can offer.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to post them on our forum and I will do my best to answer them.
I would like to thank you for the support that you have given the site over the years under my ownership. It’s been very much appreciated and I look forward to continuing to provide the same service for you under the new ownership.”
