News Headlines – Thu 10th

After Tuesday\’s false start, we\’re relieved to hear the Fuerte Wave Classic at least got enough wind for some freesailing at Caleta yesterday with Thomas Traversa, Bjorn Dunkerbeck, Mikey Clancy, Daida Moreno and Nayra Alonso turning heads on the left-hand reef-break. More here, and check out the official FWC day 2 movie below…

It\’s great to see a women\’s fleet at the year\’s FWC, but worse news for the fairer sex is that the women\’s freestyle has had to be withdrawn from the PWA Mui Ne event in Vietnam due to a lack of entries, according to Daily Dose. Men\’s freestyle and slalom for both genders remain scheduled to kick off the World Tour in \’Nam, 25 February to 3 March. More at pwavietnam.com

Sticking with \’style, here\’s the first footage out of last weekend\’s EsseXpression – from John Palmer, who took second place in the freestyle jam: “It was a really great event with a good turn-out, some awesome conditions and hopefully will encourage more people to do the UKWA events this year. We are hoping to get some more events in throughout the year so if  anyone would like to come and wants to join the mailing list please email john@k718.co.uk” See more from John at k718.co.uk – and check out some of Dave White\’s pix from Point Clear at davewhite.me

And in case you\’re not familiar with John Palmer\’s work, check out this highlights movie from his 2010 season as manager of Club Dahab. Looks to us like K-718 could be popping up all over the results lists this season…

Meanwhile down in Plymouth, K-656 James Randall has a tidy set of freestyle snaps from his Torpoint sessions last weekend. And out on Guernsey in the Channel Isles Martyn Ogier – better known for his speedsailing but apparently also pretty handy in the waves – has posted a decent forward loop sequence courtesy of Pierre at gsyphoto.com

Talking of speed, jp-australia.com is carrying a pair of record-breaking updates. Oisín van Gelderen\’s Irish record has been verified and confirmed by WGPSSRC, while in Holland Jacques van der Hout has hit 48.93 knot max GPS to claim a new Dutch record.

Boards Magazine\’s February 2011 issue hits the shelves of Britain\’s newsagents today – inside, Whitey hits South Cornwall and talks to Rich Page, Thorpy covers cold water survival, Adrian and the Clones review the latest crop of 4-batten wave sails … but most controversial of all, the scourge of the boards.co.uk forum Graham Fuller has been given a column to call his own. Look out!

And finally, we featured Kuma Movie\’s film of Tonky Frans yesterday. \’Crazy\’, we called him … but in a nice way! Just to justify that a little, check out the Japanese filmmaker\’s latest release: the travels of his teddy bear around the world of windsurfing in 2009. The little furry fella\’s called Chibikke if Kuma\’s Google-translated blog can be believed…
