News Headlines – Fri 11th

Today\’s headlines just have to kick off with this beauty from Cold Water Productions, as filmmaker Bryan Metcalf-Perez is joined by Philip Soltysiak plus Britain\’s Max Rowe and Al Nichol  to discover the joys of Brazil in Mix & Match. Enjoy!

Why no Fuerte Wave Classic, we hear you cry? Well, pretty simple really: no action – competitors were given the day off as the wind was never going to materialise yesterday. It should pick up over the weekend though, so keep up with the action on fuertewaveclassic.com – vote for your favourite rider and it could be worth your while as there\’s a Simmer Blacktip sail, Generator wetsuit or Mayhem harness up for grabs…

Thomas Traversa could be a decent bet there, and he\’s fresh onto the island from Ireland with umi Pictures, where apparently “Thomas sailed from 8 knots to 50 knots with two sails: a 4.2 & 4.0 using the same boom, mast and one board…” Conditions look pretty tasty too, just check out this umi rough cut of Timo Mullen

Timo\’s Starboard teammate, Danish formula racer Jesper Vesterstrøm has just changed sail brands to NorthSails for an assault on the world title in 2011, more here. In other transfer news, French racer Pierre Mortefon and Venezualan freestyler Deivis Paternina Teran have both signed to Fanatic, more here. Meanwhile Dutch racer Pieter Bijl will ride JP-Australia, more here.

Staying on the racecourse, newly crowned Aussie Formula Champion Sean O\’Brien has released this recap of his victory at the Downunder Pro Formula Windsurfing Championships in Hawks Nest, Australia, won overall by Wilhelm Schurmann. Check it out…

And Sean\’s sail sponsor Point-7 have some handy hints for anyone considering this year\’s super-long-distance race week at DefiWind in Gruissance, Southern France. Entries open later this month, start your planning here.

The other long-distance race hurtling over the horizon is the 2011 Dakhla Festival – kicking off 22 February in deepest Morocco, this year\’s event comprises a wavesailing comp alongside the 37-mile downwinder and music festival. More at dakhla-festival.com and here\’s last year\’s event round-up movie…

And finally, over at the ABM Convention in Hannover where the local police approached Helge Wilkins for the solution to a little image problem. We\’re not sure his solution is all that likely to catch on though – check it out at star-board.com
