News Headlines – Fri 13th

So, it\’s Friday 13th and the wire\’s gone eerily dead this morning from BWA Ireland. How very ominous … best we can work out competition was postponed yesterday due to a lack of conditions. But judging by the BigSalty forecast it ought to be game on again today. More craic at – and meanwhile, feast your eyes on this: Jay Haysey\’s resume of round one last weekend at BWA Rhosneigr. Conspicuously absent from the first two British national wavesailing events of the season, Steve Thorp\’s had to spend some time at work after a hectic few weeks scoring Iceland, slicing his head open getting off the bog, then down to Broadstairs in Kent and deepest Cornwall over that windy royal nuptual bank holiday weekend. And you thought it was a long drive to your favourite spot?!? More at

Staying on the blogs (we\’ll get off carefully in a minute!) while Aleksy Gayda seems to be ruling the 2011 amateur fleet having won in Rhossi and now firmly in charge in Brandon Bay, his little sister Megan Gayda is back home in Essex having come third at her first ever competition at BWA Wales. Check their latest news at – and if you happen to be a sponsorship budget holder looking to support the future of British freewave, you could do a lot worse than looking east…

And down the A13, home ground for the Gayda siblings is on the River Thames, technically making them river rippers. Which leads us seamlessly (!) to this little nugget from just across the Channel: check out the Rhone River Guide on

Here\’s an update and a half from soul-surfer and \’Beach Vibez\’ MC Ruben \’BNG\’ Petresie – click for some DefiWind news, AHD and KA Sails spiel, long distance racing, chilling and some fishy business…

Right – what else have we got? Well, North Sails are offering first prize of a brand new Ego sail for their Facebook best pic competition. Just post an action or lifestyle pic featuring North Sails on, get it liked more than anyone else\’s, and the rig\’s yours! More at

Here\’s a slightly embarrassing one – although we reported on Tushy\’s longboard success at the UKWA Weymouth Cup the other week, we\’ve heard nothing about the Formula class. Until today when we read news from (based on the other side of the world!) that Richard Jones won it, followed by Tim Gibson and Dave Coles. The next racing is Derwent Reservoir this weekend, then the next Cup event\’s Minnis Bay, 28-30 May, alongside the UKWA and EFPKT Freestyle. More at

They may well technically be one of our competitors, but we\’re friendly enough and credit where it\’s due as the latest issue of Brian McDowell\’s Windsurfer International mag contains one of the best photo-stories we\’ve seen for a good long while: check out Jaws 15th March 2011 at

And finally, we\’ll leave you with one of the most random posts we\’ve ever seen on a windsurfing blog – live and direct from the Club Vass circus school (enrol at their new site at, here\’s Ric Cleworth at demonstrating some impressive ball control. Next week, unicycles…
