News Headlines – Wed 15th

After a fitful third day of freestyle at PWA Bonaire, local hero of the first double elimination Kiri Thode was finally taken down in the second single … by a Euro! Gaastra team-mate Steven Van Broeckhoven managed to overcome Kiri (in his third final of the contest so far) by just half a point. It\’s been business as usual in the women\’s fleet though, with Sarah-Quita Offringa beating Laure Treboux for the third day on the trot. Catch action from the men\’s and women\’s double live this afternoon at pwaworldtour.com, read the day three report here, and meanwhile from day two here\’s the first men\’s double elimination showdown between Kiri and Taty Frans…

Up into mainland USA, the greats of American (and in fact worldwide) wavesailing are converging on Pistol River for the start of tomorrow\’s Wave Bash, the second stop on the phoenix that is the American Windsurfing Touramericanwindsurfingtour.com. So for today\’s movie we thought we\’d look inland to Arlington on the Columbia River Gorge for this footage from last Tuesday 7th June as featured on river-rippers.net

And it\’s not too long now until the PWA wavesailors converge on the Canaries for the two-stop Pozo and El Médano events (5-10 & 14-20 July – more at pwaworldtour.com). But even sooner than that it\’s the Red Bull Rockets GPS high-jump spectacular on 24-30 June (redbull.es/rockets) so it\’s good to see that Pozo on Gran Canaria is finally coming to life for the summer. Check out blog updates from locals Dario Ojeda (darioe211.blogspot.com), Jonas Ceballos (jonase40.blogspot.com) and John Skye (skyeboy.blogspot.com) – plus here\’s a sick backside waveride from Victor Fernandez yesterday, courtesy of pozonews-en.blogspot.com

Here\’s another guy that would have been well up for all that (and more!): Andy Funnell, K-24, tragically lost his life off the South Coast seven years ago today – 15 June 2004. Close friend and Animal teammate Timo Mullen @TimoIR69 suggests how best we can show our respects this morning: “remember him today when out on the water and go for something rad”. Our thoughts are with Andy\’s family on what must be a tough day – ukwindsurfing.com/andy_funnell

Talking of that man Mullen, he\’s featured on the Starboard site having been getting his kicks from a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S just recently at the Silverstone Formula 1 circuit. More at star-board.com

To Timo\’s homeland (or at least home island) now, and Point-7 ripper Martin Ten Hoeve has posted a great report on his travels through the Emerald Isle from the BWA 4 Nations in Brandon Bay to freesailing with Timo, Mikey Clancy and co around Magheroarty further north up the wild west coast. Check it out at point-7.com and martintenhoeve.blogspot.com

Here\’s one that nearly passed us by last month: Tushingham / Starboard racer Pte Dan Skudder of the Army cleaned up at The Forces Open Championships 2011, 10-13 May, winning all four disciplines – slalom, master blaster, long distance and course racing – on his X15 sails and iSonic boards. More at tushingham.com

And finally, we mentioned Joao Rodrigues yesterday, as the Portuguese Olympic funding has seemingly been pulled by their cash-strapped government hence this leading light on the RS:X scene may not appear at Weymouth 2012. And right on cue he\’s back in the news again, having entered the Guinness Book of Records after sailing more than 160 consecutive miles between the Islands of Madeira and Selvagem Grande.
