News Headlines – Mon 10th

Well, there\’s only one place to set the first act of today\’s headlines – Tiree, and the 25th Anniversary Wave Classic that kicked off on Saturday with the biggest forecast in years. Day one saw surprisingly light winds and small swell, but it was enough to complete the first round of women\’s competition at Balevullin. Scene two, and a slightly bigger, stronger day two yesterday at Ballephuil resulted in Ben Proffitt taking the pro fleet single from Andy King in 2nd, Andy \’Bubble\’ Chambers in 3rd and Timo Mullen in 4th. Meanwhile it\’s no great surprise to hear that Aleksy Gayda\’s in charge of the amateurs again, Boardseeker videographer Alfie Hart took 2nd from another West Wales local Lewis Merrony in 3rd and new boy \’Schlep\’ 4th. And in the women\’s, Debbie Kennedy underlined her first day result with another win over Kariina Pirhonen, Sophie Gilje and Eilidh Sutherland. It\’s not all been wavesailing in the UK just lately though, and as we touched upon last week Thursday 6th October saw a brutally windy day up at West Kirby. Perfect for speedsailing, then, and 40+ knot GPS results were widely posted on Most notably, Steve Thorp scored a 50-knot display and broke into the top ten 2011 speeds on his custom Moo needle (more here), the self-styled \’mere mortal grandad\’s view of proceedings is worth a read as Norman \’Normski\’ Petty reports for, but with a 45.23 knot average and 47.92 max the fastest man on the day was Dutchman Jacques van der Hout (more here). Onto another fast man now, in the shape of former speed campaigner and now World Slalom Champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck. Because the Terminator has been spotted (thanks to \’racing\’ Klaas Voget in this German ad for the 21st Century VW Beetle from, sponsors of the recent PWA Sylt event.
