Whitstable Freewave

Whitstable freewave 4 10th/11th June 2006

Matthew Leonard brings us this report from Whitstable

The venue for freewave four was Whitstable Yacht Club, and before the event the forecast was looking good, with ideal weather conditions for strong sea breezes. There was a large fleet of 12 juniors and 5 youths, but no amateurs or pros (apart from Chris Audsley, who turned up to compete and ended up judging). On Saturday, there was a lightish offshore wind, so for the first time judging was to take place from a boat, out where the wind was stronger and steadier. Getting out to the competition area was tricky, as the wind was very light near the beach. The competition was soon underway, and from the first rounds it was myself, Sam Neal and Richard Jones who won their heats and got straight through to the final, while the other competitors sailed in the repechage. Changing streamers in the water was difficult, as you had to hang on to a rope and wait for the judging to finish to get your streamer passed down from the boat .Then the junior final was run, and although it was very close, I did some gecko flakas with lots of sail flicking, to take first place, ahead of Richard Jones and Sam Neal.

In the youths, Graham Woods won in front of Tom Parsons, in 2nd place

After the first round an expression session was held, for those who wanted more competition.
Sunday morning unfortunately had very little wind, so the presentation was held at midday, with prizes donated by event sponsors White Stuff, XS energy drinks, and Whitstable windsurfing.
Thanks to Trevor Funnel and everyone else involved in organising this very enjoyable event.
