Princess of Sofia

The Princess of Sofia is an Olympic style regatta that brings together all the Olympic classes. It is an open event, but is a good indicator of Olympic contenders progress in the lead up to the 2008 games to be held in China. This year the Princess of Sofia regatta is held on the island of Palma de Mallorca in the Mediterrean.

Yesterday the event got off to a very light start, the wind rose just enough in the afternoon and only one race was completed. Today the winds were much better, about a force 4 – 5, but quite offshore and gusty. 3 races were held. The best performances were by Maksym Oberemko of the Ukraine and João Rodrigues who lie in joint first, in the mens fleet. There is legendary name that many of you may recognise leading the ladies, that is of New Zealand\’s Barbara Kendall. Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw lie 9th and 13th in their respective fleets.
