Despite the record light winds, the UKWA South West Cup still managed to get a result! What is it about the Easter Bank Holiday in the UK? It is never ever windy, or not since the days of the BWA. Usually there is a small amount of surf amongst the huge amount of people, but this year not even the surf turned up. After 3 days waiting, only the most marginal of winds blew in an offshore kind of way on bank holiday monday. This was enough to get some iffy tactical racing in for all course racing fleets. Keith Atkinson continued his domination of the Formula fleet with a consistent performance, first places in the Formula fleet were shared between Dan Simpson, Xavier Ferlet, Nick Deverall and Keith. A diminished RS:X fleet was present, due to the Brit attendance at the Princess of Sofia regatta. The increasingly competitve Junior Techno One Design Fleet (most of who have already had a weeks training at the RYA Easter Camp) was won by the dimunitive world champion Ali Masters, powering round the course on a 7.8. Ali won every single race his nearest rival, and name to look out for in the future, was Sam Latham. Local boy Sam Sills came it at 3rd and in 4th place, but also first girl was Sophie Bailey.
The newest developments in windsurfing are happening in the Raceboard fleet, although time will tell how the new designs perform as they hit the market, and whether new and old names will be lured back to the circuit. At present it was the smallest fleet with 16 entrants, Robert Kent winning in his usual domineering style with a string of bullets.. bullets on a string!
