Poole Harbour Watersports are the first retail outlet in the UK to take delivery of Starboard Stand Up Paddle Boards.
Adhering to Starboards approach to design, the 12\’6″ SUP board is one of the most progressive boards on the market. At its widest it is 30″, which makes the board a stable platform to learn to paddle on, but at the same time its narrow tail allows excellent maneuverability on the waves and allows for good paddling speed in the flat. This SUP gives the option for windsurfing, by attaching a rig. On those epic surf days with the wind less than 10 knots – this is a superb board to take wavsailing – or even cruising.
Timo Mullen (pictured) says: “I went out to Maui to assist in the development of this new area of board riding for Starboard. I was already doing a fair bit of stand up paddling before I went to Maui and these new boards are a vast improvement on the barges I was riding before hand, which although stable just didn\’t perform in the waves. The Starboard does everything really well. I\’m equally at home on it when paddling across Poole Harbour or picking off some small summer swell at Kimmeridge.”
The sport of Stand Up Paddle Surfing has grown from its Hawaiian roots to provide another means of movement over the water. Mixing techniques from surfing, windsurfing and open canoeing stand up paddle surfing has many different sides to it as a sport. Already growing fast in the US the sport is starting to make its presence felt on the shores of the UK. Top UK Surfers Chris Thomson and Spencer Hargreaves have been spotted riding Starboard SUP boards in Cornwall and along with Timo Mullen; John Hibbard has been getting in on the act as well.
