After much fighting in and out of the dressing room with Hamilton, the Spaniard just claimed pole position with a stunning performance. Well they both are Spanish, but one certainly does not earn a million bucks per event, but does look much better in a wetsuit attacking steep waves rather than tarmac corners.
Nayra Alonso today claimed her first windsurfing wave elimination victory with a stunning performance of fluid and aggressive wave riding at the Sylt World Cup. Anyone who has witnessed Nayra Alonso windsurf knows that when it comes to cross onshore, punchy port tack riding she is in her element. Today her element was Sylt as she beat reigning world champion Iballa Moreno.
Current leader Daida Moreno suffered a shock defeat to Steffi Wahl, Daida who is a supreme all round windsurfer is on a much more even playing field when it is wave riding in less than perfect conditions. Steffi Wahl is also known for vertical style wave riding and smacking hard sections, but to beat Moreno in only the second round is a victory in itself. Wahl went onto meet Alonso, Iballa Moreno and Junko Nagoshi in the womens final.
A final notably absent of the usual suspects Karin Jaggi, Anne Marie Reichman and Daida Moreno. Wahl could not repeat her form and take out the twin Moreno so had to settle for second. Alonso kept her fluid stride with some vertical smacks in the critical section and windsurfed with the confidence of someone much more used to making the finals.
A well deserved 6 – 1 vote from the judges kept her flying high. The forecast for the rest of the event is not looking so promising on the wave front, however Sylt is one of those funny old places and anything can happen. With Arnon Dagen leading the slalom and Nayra Alonso the waves, it is so far, the event of the underdog.
