With the cancellation of the Maui PWA event, the women\’s world title was won by Iballa Moreno for the second year admist relative quiet. The Ladies Wave Sailing tour this year concentrated only on three events in comparison to the mens tour which saw six. Iballa Moreno\’s consistency at the top of the wave events saw her finish ahead of her sister for the second year in succession, so we thought we better catch up and find out what Iballa Moreno thought about the season…
Firstly Well done on the second wave title in a row, you must be really happy can you give a run down of how the season went?
“Yes. Im happy about this latest result….this season was a bit weird considering we missed Hawaii. So we knew Germany was the last event of the season and everyone was pretty nervious! with only three wave events in the calendar, there was no space for mistakes….At the end we didnt sail in best conditions but one more result so that was good for women windsurfing in general…. “
The women’s competition is getting more open, how do you keep ahead of the rest?
“Training hard…and always staying positive. Daida and I do both disciplines and its always hard to stay on the top of this two disciplines (freestyle and waves) because you need a lots of practice! Im not so happy with my overall result in freestyle but i know i was carrying an injury on my shoulder all summer that didn\’t make me do it 100% good….Next season i hope to be on the top again.
I know its getting to the point where you need to focus on one discipline because the level is getting higher and higher! Daida and I will keep doing both and show we can do both good. “
The men’s tour has been really exciting this year, and apart from Sylt it has seemed to overshadow the woman’s tour. What made it stand out were the extra events. Are their any plans for a standalone women’s event and if so, where would you like it to be and why?
Yes..As i was saying before this year was a bit weird considering the wave women events…but I know things are going to change soon and all the girls are motivated and positive about it….if we stay together, we can change the future of our sport in a good way…..
I know there are organizers out there wanting to put a only women event..they see the marketing tool that we are and they can find a lots of sponsors for their events, outside of the industry sponsors, and sooner or later, industry sponsors as well…..We just need to keep working on it and believing on it too!”
You have been competing on the tour for a long time now, how do you keep your motivation up?
To be honest every year i feel like its my first year on tour!! We have been on the road since 1999…and to me that was not a lond time ago…
Every year we learn from our mistakes and next year we are more ready than year before…..We love sailing and we will keep being motivated as long as we can!!!
You and your sister have both got a world title again this year, yet no board sponsor! Why is this and what message do you think it sends out?
There is no message. There are no secrets. Simply: we havent found the right one yet….. Women should get what they deserve, especially if you are on the top of the world….Sooner or later we will find the right one. I can tell you that the one that comes along, they will not regret it. We have been for many years with Roxy , North Sails,VW, and never change ,so they must be happy with us 🙂
Going on from that, who makes, designs and shapes your boards? What does a ladies board need to do that is different from a mens?
Basicly different size and volums….I worked for may years next to Nik Baker and he has showed me a lot in this aspect. I work now with different shapers in the world, mark nelson, some friends in canary island: Pablo Ruiz….they are totally different shapers but i like to try always different things in the water! Always depending of what kind of conditions you sail.
What are your plans for the winter?
“I´ve been in Fuerteventura now for a little bit surfing and sailing everytime there was wind! but im planning to do some trips like Maui (next week) and hopefully January and Feb also organize some trips with the girls to have some fun together somewhere in the world…… “
