I caught up with Maaike briefly before her first heat to get her impressions on yesterday’s achievements.
How did you feel about your second place in the first double? “I have no words” was the simple reply. And true she was so happy yesterday she barely slept. The truth is she was completely relaxed during all her heats and felt like she was free sailing. She was confident in all her moves- she knows she can land them, and she does. The fact that she had to sail so many heats in a row felt good to her. By the time she competed against Arrianne she was fully warmed up and says she sailed her best in that heat.
And in the heat against Sarah? “I just collapsed” she says, with a big smile on her face.
Maaike only started freestyling 2 years ago, she is still at school but manages to go sailing once a week (sometimes more depending on conditions). Her local spot is 1hour away so she doesn’t really get to go after school and has to wait for the weekend. After Bonaire she goes back home to finish her exams before going to Fuerte. The conditions there are very different to her home spot, and she hasn’t really had a chance to train for that but she is confident she can do well.
What does the future hold? “I want to finish school first and then will go to university. Not sure what I’ll study but I know I want to continue my education“. I asked if she was going to take a year off in between to train but she’d rather go straight to university “I’m scared if I take a break to windsurf, I’ll never want to go back to studying“. She’s probably right- with a talent like hers, who would? But she’ll still be doing the tour and does hope to beat Sarah one day… watch this space.
